A Warm Blanket for a Cold Solid-Wall Home

This 1930s semi in Birmingham had solid brick walls — no cavity to fill — and the owners were tired of cold rooms and draughts.

The only real answer for a solid-walled home is external wall insulation. We wrapped the entire property in a 100mm insulated render system, paying careful attention to window reveals, the porch and the party wall line so there were no cold bridges left behind.

Beyond the warmth, the owners chose a smooth silicone render finish in a soft cream — the house looks brand new, and the front bedroom that used to be the coldest room in the house is now the warmest.
